What You Will Learn
The module is designed to provide an interactive and informative approach to diversity. The focus of the activities in the workshop is to change attitudes and modify behaviour by helping participants understand their biases and prejudices when interacting with people who are “different” from themselves. Participants complete a Personal Diversity Awareness Profile that assesses an individual’s personal diversity awareness on a continuum that ranges from naiveté to internalization. Unlike other diversity awareness instruments, this assessment focuses on understanding personal diversity identity thus opening up opportunities for changing attitudes and modifying behaviours. Rather than labelling individuals with subjective descriptors that often cause defensiveness and frustration, the assessment uses animal descriptors. Individuals will, then, openly discuss their position on the identity continuum without having to feel labelling in a judgmental way. A video is used to enhance the learning.
